What rules should a Facebook group have?

Every Facebook group needs a short list of specific rules: be respectful, no spam, a clear policy on self-promotion, and one or two rules for your group’s own topic, such as listing formats in a buy and sell group. Three to seven rules that members can read in a minute work best.

How to use the group rules generator

Choose a starting set, adjust it, then paste each rule into Facebook.

  1. Pick your group type

Choose local community, buy and sell, business, hobby, support or brand. Each type switches on a sensible starting set of rules.

  2. Add your topic and promo day

Your topic goes into the “stay on topic” rule. Pick the day members may share their business if you allow self-promotion.

  3. Tick the rules you need

Switch rules on or off. Keep the list short: if you have never had to remove a type of post, you probably do not need a rule for it yet.

  4. Copy into Facebook

Copy each rule’s title and details into the matching fields in your group’s Rules section, or copy the whole numbered list for a pinned welcome post.

What makes a group rule work

A good rule names the behavior, not the attitude. “Be positive” is hard to enforce. “Sales posts go in the Friday thread” is clear to members and easy for moderators. Keep each title short enough to scan, put the reason in the details, and order the list by how often each rule comes up. Our Facebook group rules guide has more examples by group type.

Rules that keep a group active and welcoming

  • Respect: disagree with ideas, not people
  • Spam: post once, no copy-paste chains
  • Promotion: one day a week or one pinned thread
  • Buy and sell: price, pickup area and a real photo
  • Privacy: what is shared here stays here
  • Admins: a clear final say, and a way to ask why

Posting in other people’s groups? Read their rules first

The same habits apply when you are the member. Check each group’s rules before you post, save offers for its promo day, and give every group its own wording. Groups with a promo day are a great fit for a weekly schedule. See how to promote your business in Facebook groups for the right way to do it.

In PilotPoster

Post on each group’s promo day, automatically

Many groups only allow promotion on one day. In PilotPoster, put those groups in a saved group list and give it a weekly recurring schedule for that day. Safety Autopilot keeps the pace relaxed and pauses groups that keep failing, so your posts land the right way.

FAQ

Group rules questions

How many rules should a Facebook group have?

Most groups do best with three to seven short rules. Members actually read a short list, and admins can point to a specific rule when they decline a post. Start with kindness, spam and promotion, then add one or two rules for the problems your group really sees.

Where do I add rules to my Facebook group?

As an admin, open your group, go to the admin tools and find the Rules section. Add each rule with a short title and a description, then save. Paste the title and details from this generator into the matching fields, one rule at a time, and reorder them so the most important rule comes first.

Should my group allow self-promotion?

Many busy groups allow it on one day a week or in a single pinned thread. That keeps the feed useful while giving members a fair place to share their business. A clear promo day also helps you moderate, because every sales post outside that window breaks a simple, visible rule.

Can I change my group rules later?

Yes. Admins can add, edit, reorder or delete rules at any time from the admin tools. Review them every few months. If you keep removing the same kind of post, write a rule for it. If a rule never comes up, cut it so the list stays short.

What happens when someone breaks a group rule?

Admins and moderators can decline or remove the post, and Facebook lets you mention the rule that was broken. A friendly first warning works for most members. Save removal for repeat or serious problems, and say in your last rule that admins have the final say.
