How to Make a Facebook Post Shareable (Profile, Page, Groups, and After Posting)

A Facebook post can only be shared as widely as its audience. Here is how to make a Facebook post shareable on your profile, Page, and in public or private groups, how to fix it after posting, and why the Share button sometimes disappears.

⚡ Quick Answer

To make a Facebook post shareable, set its audience to Public. In the composer, click the audience selector under your name and choose Public; for a post you already published, click the audience icon next to its date (in the app, tap the three dots, then Edit privacy). Facebook never lets a share reach people outside the original audience, so Friends posts only travel among your friends. Page posts and public group posts are always public, while private group posts can't be shared out, so post publicly on your profile or Page and share that post into the group.

If people keep asking "can I share this?" or your post has no Share button, the cause is almost always one setting. This guide covers how to make a Facebook post shareable on your profile, on a Page, and in public and private groups, how to fix it after posting, and what to check when the Share button still won't appear.

The rule underneath all of it: a Facebook post can only be shared as widely as its audience. Every rule below links to Meta's Help Center so you can check the current wording.

Who Can Share a Facebook Post? The Rule Behind the Share Button #

Meta's page on sharing posts says that depending on the original post's privacy settings, you may not see the option to share it, and you can't share posts with people who weren't part of the original audience. Its example: a Friends post can't be reshared to Public. Share options (Share now, Share to a group, Send in Messenger and so on) appear only when the audience allows them, and they never widen it.

Your Facebook PageAlways public when posted on FacebookAnyone

One note on Pages: Meta says a Page post created on Facebook will always have its audience set to public, and the only way to restrict one is to create it in Meta Business Suite.

How to Make a Facebook Post Shareable Before You Publish #

Set the audience in the composer and you never have to fix it later.

On a computer #

  1. Click the "What's on your mind?" box at the top of Feed or your profile.
  2. Below your name, click the audience selector (it shows the current audience, such as Friends).
  3. Choose Public, then write and publish the post.

On iPhone and Android #

  1. Tap the "What's on your mind?" box.
  2. Tap the audience button under your name (it shows the current audience).
  3. Select Public, tap Done if your app shows it, and post.

The change applies only to that post: Meta says your next post goes back to your default audience. An audience change made on one device updates on all of them. Labels shift between app versions, but the selector always sits under your name in the composer.

💡
Make Public your default for business posts

If most of your profile posts are meant to travel (events, job openings, offers), set your default audience to Public and switch personal posts to Friends one at a time. You'll stop publishing shareable posts to the wrong audience by accident.

How to Make a Facebook Post Shareable After Posting #

Meta lets you change the audience of a post you've already shared, so there's no need to delete and repost.

DeviceSteps
ComputerGo to your profile, scroll to the post, click the audience icon next to the date or time, choose Public
iPhoneOpen your profile, find the post, tap the three dots at the top right, tap Edit privacy, choose Public, tap Done
AndroidOpen your profile, find the post, tap the three dots at the top right, tap Edit privacy, choose Public

This works only on your own profile. If you posted on someone else's profile, Meta says that person controls the audience. For a reel, open it from your profile, click the audience selector at the top, and pick Public. Stories use their own story privacy setting (Public, Friends, or Custom).

Can You Make a Post Shareable Without Making It Public? #

Partly. With a Friends audience, your friends get a Share button, but a reshare still can't reach anyone outside your original audience. When a friend shares your Friends-only post, it only shows to people who are also your friends. That suits a family update, not a fundraiser, missing pet, job listing, or offer you want strangers to see.

If you want reach without putting the post on your personal profile, use a channel that is public by design:

  • A Facebook Page: Page posts are public, so anyone can share them, and your profile stays personal. See Facebook groups vs Pages for business for when a Page is worth it.
  • A public group: posts there are public and shareable by anyone who sees them.
  • Tagging, with care: Meta's Friends option includes friends of anyone tagged, so tagging someone who is genuinely in the post widens it to their friends.

How to Make a Facebook Post Shareable in a Group #

The group's privacy setting decides this, not your post. You'll find it under the group name at the top left of the group.

Public groups #

Anyone on or off Facebook can see what's posted in a public group, and Meta's comparison table answers "Can you share content from the group?" with "Yes." Nothing extra is needed. If members can't see or share your post, check whether it's still waiting for admin approval.

Private groups #

For private groups Meta's answer is "No": only current members see posts, and content can't be shared out. That privacy is why people join, and you can't override it from the post. The one exception is group highlights: where available, members can approve some of their own private posts and comments to be shown publicly.

The private-group workaround: post publicly first #

  1. Create the post on your profile with the audience set to Public, or on your Page.
  2. Under the post, click Share, then Share to a group. Meta documents this flow for sharing a Page post to a group.
  3. Pick the private group, add a line for members ("Feel free to share this one"), and post.

Members see your shared post in the group. Because the original is public, they can open it and share it to their profiles, Pages, or other groups, while comments inside the group stay private to members.

⚠️
Check the group rules first

Some private groups don't allow shared posts or outside links, and many admins approve every post. Read the rules and pinned posts first, and ask the admin if promotional shares are welcome. Our guide to Facebook group rules shows what admins look for.

Meta says locking your profile changes past Public posts to Friends, so unlocking alone won't restore them. Sharing blocks are temporary and follow posting a lot in a short time, sharing posts marked as unwelcome, or breaking Community Standards. Group-level limits are covered on Meta's page about why you can't post in a group.

💡
Test it logged out

Copy the post's link and open it in a private browser window where you're logged out. Meta defines Public as visible to anyone, including people off Facebook, so if the post won't load there, it isn't public and strangers can't share it.

Write Posts People Actually Want to Share #

A Share button only makes sharing possible. People share when a post is useful to someone they know:

  • A reason to pass it on. "Hiring two weekend baristas in Eastside, $18 an hour" gets shared because readers know someone who fits. "We're growing!" doesn't.
  • Full details in the post. Date, place, price, and how to respond in the first two lines, so the share makes sense to someone who has never heard of you.
  • One specific ask. "Share this with anyone in Austin who needs a dog walker" tells people exactly who to think of.
  • A strong image or short video. See which formats earn attention in Facebook group post formats ranked.

When Shares Aren't Enough: Post in Each Group Yourself #

Shares are a bonus you can't schedule. For a launch, an event, or a weekly offer, post directly in each relevant group you've joined, with wording that fits that group. That's where the audience is: almost 1.8 billion people use Facebook Groups every month (Meta, October 2024).

Frequently Asked Questions #

How do I make a Facebook post shareable? #

Set its audience to Public. In the composer, click the audience selector under your name and choose Public. For an existing post, click the audience icon next to the date, or in the app tap the three dots and Edit privacy.

How do I make a Facebook post shareable in a private group? #

You can't make the group post itself shareable, because Meta doesn't allow sharing content out of private groups. Publish the post publicly on your profile or Page, then use Share and Share to a group. Members can then share the public original.

Why is there no Share button on my Facebook post? #

Usually the audience is Friends, Custom, or Only me, or the post is in a private group. Other causes are a locked profile, a post on someone else's profile, or a temporary sharing block.

Can friends share my post if it's set to Friends? #

Yes, but only to people already in your audience. Meta doesn't allow sharing outside the original audience, so a Friends post can't be reshared to Public or to their friends who aren't your friends.

Can I make a Facebook post shareable after posting? #

Yes. Change its audience to Public from your profile and it becomes shareable without reposting. This works for your own profile posts and reels, not posts on someone else's profile.

Get Your Post Into Every Group, Not Just One #

Instead of hoping members share it, schedule a version of your post into each Facebook group you've joined, rewritten per group and paced like a person.

  • Private group posts can't be shared out; post publicly first, then share that post into the group.
  • Locking your profile turns past public posts into Friends posts.
