The most recent official Facebook group statistic is Meta's October 2024 statement that almost 1.8 billion people use Facebook Groups every month, across 25 million monthly active public groups. Meta has not published a newer Groups figure, and since 2024 it no longer reports Facebook-only users at all; its headline metric is now 3.60 billion daily active people across all Meta apps (June 2026). The widely repeated "2.04 billion Groups users" figure does not trace back to Meta. For marketers, the key contrast is reach: the average Facebook Page post reaches about 1.25% of followers (Socialinsider, August 2026), while no independent study measures group reach, because outside tools lost access to group data in 2024.
Most Facebook group statistics pages recycle the same undated numbers, and some were never published by Meta at all. This page lists what Meta and credible researchers have actually said, with the exact wording, a link to the original source, and the publication date. Old figures are labeled as old. Untraceable ones go in the "stop citing" section.
Every figure was checked on October 15, 2026. If you quote one, quote its date too: a 2020 number presented as current is how bad statistics spread.

How Many People Use Facebook Groups? Meta's Official Numbers by Year #
These are the four Meta figures we could trace.
| Published | Monthly Groups users | Exact wording | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 22, 2017 | 1 billion+ | "More than 1 billion people around the world use Groups" | Meta Newsroom |
| May 1, 2018 | 1.4 billion | Announced at F8 2018 | TechCrunch |
| Oct 1, 2020 | 1.8 billion+ | "More than 1.8 billion people use Groups every month" | Meta Newsroom |
| Oct 4, 2024 | Almost 1.8 billion | "Almost 1.8 billion people use Facebook Groups every month" | Meta Newsroom |
The pattern is fast growth to 2020, then a plateau. Read literally, "almost 1.8 billion" in 2024 is no higher than "more than 1.8 billion" in 2020. That does not prove usage shrank, since rounding may differ, but no official source supports the claim that Groups usage is still climbing.
What share of Facebook users are in Groups? #
Meta has never published this, so here is an estimate with the math shown: almost 1.8 billion Groups users (October 2024) divided by 3.07 billion Facebook monthly users (the last figure reported, December 2023) is roughly 59%. The figures are ten months apart, so treat "about 6 in 10" as an estimate.
Why there is no 2026 Groups number #
On its February 1, 2024 earnings call, Meta said it would "no longer report Facebook daily and monthly active users." Since then it reports only Family daily active people, the unique people using Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or WhatsApp: 3.60 billion on average for June 2026, up 3% year over year. That is not a Groups number, so any precise 2026 Groups user count is recycled or made up.
Write "almost 1.8 billion people use Facebook Groups every month (Meta, October 2024)." Keeping "almost" and the date makes the claim accurate and shows readers how fresh it is.
Facebook Group Membership and Activity Statistics #
- Groups per person: "most people on Facebook are members of at least 15 active groups," wrote Meta's head of Facebook, Tom Alison (October 2022).
- Group joins: more than 100 million every day, in the same post.
- Public groups: "25 million monthly active public groups, and this number is growing" (October 2024). Meta has not given a total count since "tens of millions of active groups" in 2019.
- Admins: more than 70 million people running groups active in the past month (October 2020).
- Meaningful groups: more than 400 million people in a group they find meaningful (April 2019), against a 2017 goal of 1 billion. No update since.
- Young adults: "posting to groups in the U.S. and Canada has been growing," boosted mainly by young adults, said CFO Susan Li on the July 31, 2024 earnings call. No percentage given.
Users sit in more groups than the feed can show, so ranking decides what members see. The tactics that win it are in how to increase Facebook engagement.
Facebook Reach and Engagement Statistics: Pages vs Groups #
Page organic reach is about 1.25% of followers #
Socialinsider's reach study (872,075 posts, January 2025 to August 2026) puts average Facebook Page organic reach at 1.25% of followers as of August 2026; the same article cites a 1.80% mid-2026 average. A 10,000-follower Page should expect a typical post to reach roughly 125 to 180 people (10,000 x 1.25% to 1.80%, an estimate). Larger Pages fare worse:
| Page size (followers) | Average organic reach per post |
|---|---|
| 1,000 to 5,000 | 4.35% |
| 5,000 to 10,000 | 3.40% |
| 10,000 to 50,000 | 2.70% |
| 50,000 to 100,000 | 1.50% |
| 100,000 to 1 million | 0.50% |
Engagement is thinner still. Socialinsider's 2026 Facebook benchmarks (25 million posts from 130,683 Pages, 2024 and 2025 data) found an average engagement rate of 0.15% of followers, with link posts lowest at 0.05%. Other providers divide by impressions instead, so compare like with like.
A growing share of the feed is recommended #
In April 2023, Zuckerberg said "more than 20% of content in your Facebook and Instagram feeds" is recommended by AI from people, groups or accounts you do not follow, and Meta added that these recommendations include "group content" (Q1 2023 call). Meta has not updated the share since, but reports that better recommendations drove 5% more Facebook time spent in Q3 2025 (October 2025 call) and a 7% lift in organic Feed and video views in Q4 2025 (January 2026 call).
Group reach: no credible benchmark exists #
We found no independent, large-sample study of group post reach, and the reason is structural. Meta removed group permissions such as publish_to_groups from its API for all versions on April 22, 2024, and shut down CrowdTangle, the tool researchers used to study public groups, on August 14, 2024. Group Insights is visible only to each group's admins and moderators.
Claims like "groups reach 30 to 60 percent of members" or "50 percent more engagement than Pages" circulate widely, but none we found has a published sample or method. They may point the right way, since group posts notify members, but they are practitioner estimates, not benchmarks.
Measure your own instead. Admins can use Group Insights. Members can track (reactions + comments + shares) divided by member count per post and compare groups over a month; the Facebook engagement calculator does the math. The strategic comparison is in Facebook Groups vs Pages for business.
Facebook Usage and Demographics Statistics for 2026 #
No credible source publishes Groups-only demographics, so these describe Facebook overall.
| Metric | Figure | Source | Published |
|---|---|---|---|
| US adults who use Facebook | 71% (surveyed Feb to Jun 2025, 5,022 adults) | Pew Research Center | Nov 20, 2025 |
| US adults using Facebook, by age | 18 to 29: 68%; 30 to 49: 80%; 50 to 64: 74%; 65+: 57% | Pew Research Center | Nov 20, 2025 |
| US adults who visit Facebook daily | About half; 37% several times a day | Pew Research Center | Nov 20, 2025 |
| Online adults 16+ using Facebook monthly (global) | 56.9% | DataReportal, citing GWI Q2 2025 | Oct 2025 |
| Average daily time per user, Android app | 67 minutes | DataReportal, citing Similarweb | Oct 2025 |
| Facebook ad reach (January 2025) | 2.28 billion, 39.4% of adults 18+ | DataReportal | Mar 12, 2025 |
Ad reach is not a proxy for active users, DataReportal warns, since it includes duplicate and business accounts. And the age data undercuts the "Facebook is for older people" narrative: US usage peaks at ages 30 to 49.
What Changed for Facebook Groups From 2024 to 2026 #
- April 22, 2024: group publishing removed from Meta's API for all versions (Graph API v19.0 changelog). API-based schedulers can no longer post into groups.
- November 3, 2025: admins can convert a private group to public; earlier posts and the member list stay private.
- May 2026: Meta began testing Forum, a standalone Groups app, which reached the US App Store on May 22 (PPC Land). Zuckerberg confirmed it on the July 29, 2026 earnings call.
- September 29, 2026: Meta announced a recognition role for top contributors that replaces contributor badges and the group expert role, with perks including "posts that publish faster," testing on Forum in the US and on Facebook globally. It also announced Ask (AI search) additions and topic labels on Forum.
The direction is consistent: Meta invests in groups as a destination and as answer material for its own AI search, while closing off automated outside access. That shift is the core argument of why Facebook groups matter more than ever.
Facebook Group Statistics You Should Stop Citing #
| Claim | What we found | Cite this instead |
|---|---|---|
| "2.04 billion people use Facebook Groups" | The only trace is a stats blog crediting an unlinked "Meta Global Community Engagement Report." We found no Meta report by that name. | Almost 1.8 billion (Meta, Oct 2024) |
| "Brands with active groups see 3.8x reach and 2.6x conversions" | Credited to the same untraceable report. | Nothing; we found no such Meta figure |
| "Facebook has 3.07 billion monthly users" (as current) | The December 2023 figure, the last Meta reported. | 3.07 billion (Dec 2023), or 3.60 billion daily people across Meta apps (June 2026) |
| "More than half of Facebook users are in five or more groups" | From a February 2021 Facebook-supported NYU GovLab report using a YouGov survey (Search Engine Journal). It describes respondents, not all users. | Most users are in at least 15 active groups (Meta, Oct 2022) |
| "1.8 billion Groups users" with no date | Published in 2020, restated as "almost" in 2024. | The same number, with its date |
| "Groups get 30 to 60% reach" | No published sample or method. | Your own Group Insights data |
Quick test: if a stat names a report but does not link it, search for that title on the publisher's own site. Not there? Do not repeat it.
What These Facebook Group Statistics Mean for Marketers #
- The audience is huge and stable, not exploding. Almost 1.8 billion monthly users is reason enough; skip "fastest-growing" claims.
- Page-only organic is close to invisible. At 1.25%, an 8,000-follower Page reaches about 100 people per post (an estimate). The full free playbook is in Facebook marketing without ads.
- Good group posts travel past members. Recommended feed content includes group content, and posts in the 25 million active public groups are visible to anyone.
- Helpful answers are becoming search inventory. Forum's Ask pulls answers from existing group posts, and the recognition role rewards helpful members with faster publishing.
- Consistency at scale is the hard part. Posting in 30 or more groups weekly is slow by hand, and rushing trips spam filters. Read Facebook group posting limits first, and use how to find Facebook groups for marketing to pick groups worth the effort.
Since April 22, 2024, API-based schedulers cannot publish into Facebook groups; they can post to Pages or send a phone reminder. PilotPoster is a web dashboard plus Chrome extension that posts from your own logged-in browser to every group you have joined, with human-like delays and a unique version of each post per group. Its group intelligence shows a success rate for every group, so you measure your own results instead of trusting averages that do not exist.
Then tie posts to outcomes with the simple setup in measuring Facebook group marketing ROI.
How We Sourced These Statistics #
- Primary sources first: Meta Newsroom, Meta earnings releases and call transcripts, and Meta's developer changelog. Third-party data only when the sample and period are disclosed.
- Exact wording kept: "almost" and "more than" change a number's meaning.
- Every figure dated, every estimate labeled with its math, untraceable figures excluded.

Frequently Asked Questions #
How many people use Facebook Groups in 2026? #
The latest official figure is almost 1.8 billion people per month, published by Meta on October 4, 2024. Meta has not released a newer Groups number and no longer reports Facebook-only users, so any precise 2026 count is either the 2024 figure or unsourced.
Are Facebook Groups still growing? #
Meta's monthly figure rose from over 1 billion in 2017 to more than 1.8 billion in 2020, then was restated as almost 1.8 billion in 2024. Meta said in July 2024 that US and Canada group posting was growing among young adults, but no official source shows overall user growth since 2020.
What is the average organic reach of a Facebook group post? #
No independent study measures it, because outside tools lost access to group data with Meta's 2024 API changes and the CrowdTangle shutdown. Ranges like 30 to 60 percent are estimates; Page posts average about 1.25% of followers (Socialinsider, August 2026).
Is the 2.04 billion Facebook Groups statistic real? #
We could not trace it to Meta. The only source we found credits a "Meta Global Community Engagement Report" that does not appear to exist, so use Meta's own figure: almost 1.8 billion monthly users, October 2024.
Can you still schedule posts to Facebook groups? #
Admins can schedule posts natively in their own groups. API-based tools lost the ability to publish into groups on April 22, 2024, so posting to groups you joined but do not admin now means doing it by hand or using PilotPoster, which posts from your own browser to every group you have joined.
- Latest official figure: almost 1.8 billion people use Facebook Groups monthly (Meta, October 2024).
- 25 million monthly active public groups; most users belong to at least 15 active groups.
- Meta's last Facebook-only figure was 3.07 billion monthly users (December 2023); it now reports 3.60 billion daily people across all apps.
- Meta's official Groups user count has not risen since 2020, so avoid "fastest-growing" claims.
- "2.04 billion Groups users" and "3.8x reach" trace to a report we could not find; do not cite them.
- Page posts reach about 1.25% of followers on average, and just 0.50% for Pages over 100,000 followers.
- No credible group reach benchmark exists; measure your own groups.
- API-based schedulers lost group posting in April 2024, while Meta builds Forum and AI search on group content.
