What are Facebook group rules?
Facebook group rules are the guidelines a group’s admins set for what members may post and how they should behave. Facebook lets admins add up to 10 rules, each with a title and a short explanation, shown in the group’s About section and often when people ask to join.
What group rules usually cover
- Self-promotion: whether, where and how often businesses may post.
- Links: allowed in posts, only in comments, or not at all.
- Topic: what belongs in the group and what does not.
- Behavior: respect, no hate speech, no harassment.
- Selling: the format and frequency for sale posts.
Why rules matter for businesses
Rules are the instructions for marketing in that group. Admins enforce them with post approval, Admin Assist and removals, so a post that breaks them rarely lasts. A business that follows them earns goodwill, and in many groups that means a steady place in the weekly promo thread where members look for services.
Follow them the right way
- Read the rules and pinned posts before your first post.
- Note each group’s promo days and link rules alongside your group lists.
- When a rule is unclear, ask an admin. Most appreciate it.
- If you run a group, write specific rules. See our group rules guide.
Where do I find a Facebook group’s rules?
Open the group and look in its About section, where admins list the rules. Rules often appear when you ask to join, and many groups also pin a post with rules or promotion guidelines at the top. Read both before posting, since pinned posts often explain promo days and link policies.
What happens if I break a Facebook group rule?
It depends on the admins. Usually the post is declined or removed, and repeat issues can lead to being muted or removed from the group. Admins can also report content that breaks Facebook’s own standards. Following the rules from the start keeps you welcome and your posts visible to members.
