What is the Meta Graph API?

The Meta Graph API is the official interface apps use to read and write Facebook data, such as publishing to a Page. Meta removed the groups permissions, including publish_to_groups, for all API versions on April 22, 2024, so third-party apps can no longer post into Facebook groups through it.

What changed for groups in 2024

With Graph API v19.0, Meta announced the deprecation of the Groups API. On April 22, 2024, the change applied to every API version, and apps lost the permissions they used to post into groups. The official note is in the Graph API v19.0 changelog. Pages were not affected, so API-based tools still publish to Pages.

Why it matters for businesses

Popular social media schedulers are built on the API, so after April 2024 they could not post into groups. Businesses that market in groups need posting that does not depend on the API. PilotPoster posts from your own browser, the way you would post by hand, to every group you have joined, your profile and groups as your Page.

How group posting works now

  • Admins can still schedule natively inside groups they run.
  • Members can post by hand in groups they joined.
  • Browser-based tools like PilotPoster post from your logged-in Chrome, with no Facebook API and no stored password.
  • Developers can still automate PilotPoster itself through its own API and webhooks.

FAQ

Common questions

More answers in the full FAQ.

Can apps still post to Facebook groups through the API?

No. Meta removed group publishing permissions such as publish_to_groups for all Graph API versions on April 22, 2024. Apps can still publish to Pages through the API. Posting into groups now happens natively, by hand, or through browser-based tools that post from your own logged-in account.

Does PilotPoster use the Facebook API?

No. PilotPoster posts organically from your own logged-in Chrome browser through its extension, one group at a time, with human-like delays. It does not use the Facebook API and does not store your Facebook password. That is why it can post to every group you have joined, not just the groups you admin.
