What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link, such as utm_source=facebook and utm_medium=group, that tell analytics tools like Google Analytics where a visitor came from. They let you see which posts, groups and campaigns send traffic to your website.
The five UTM parameters
Example link: yoursite.com/offer/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=group&utm_campaign=spring_sale&utm_content=town_group
-
utm_source: where the click came from, such as facebook. -
utm_medium: the channel, such as group or social. -
utm_campaign: the campaign name, such as spring_sale. -
utm_content: which post or version, useful for testing. -
utm_term: mainly used for paid search keywords.
Why they matter in group marketing
Facebook does not give members click analytics for their group posts, so UTMs fill the gap. Tag each group or group list differently and your analytics shows exactly which communities send visitors, sign-ups and sales. That tells you where to keep posting and where to stop.
Track the right way
PilotPoster’s outcome tracking creates tracked short links for you and counts clicks per group, so you can skip the spreadsheet.
- Use lowercase and one consistent naming scheme.
- Use utm_content to tell groups or post versions apart.
- Never put personal data in UTM tags.
- Shorten long tagged links and place them in the first comment.
How do I use UTM parameters for Facebook group posts?
Add tags to your link, such as utm_source=facebook, utm_medium=group and a campaign name, and use utm_content to tell groups or post versions apart. Put the tagged link in the first comment. Your analytics tool then shows visits and conversions from each group, so you know which ones bring results.
Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
Not when used on links you share on social media. They only add tracking information to the URL. Your site should use canonical tags, as most do by default, so search engines treat tagged and untagged versions as the same page. Avoid adding UTM tags to your own internal links.
